Discovery Channel Live Stream: How to Watch Online Without Cable

One of the earliest staples on basic cable was a little science channel called Discovery. The network has evolved greatly since the early 1980s, but the core is still there. Recently, Discovery saw the end of one of its most iconic shows, Mythbusters. And now, with that hole to fill, fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter. Other popular shows on Discovery today are Alaska: The Last Frontier, Naked and Afraid, and Moonshiners. The network is also still home to a variety of reruns of their former programming, surely to include Mythbusters, and also featuring Survivorman with Les Stroud. And, of course, you can’t miss the annual Shark Week event every year.

So, without cable, how do you watch Discovery Channel online?  Cord cutters are in luck. Here are our favorite ways to keep up with the best science, tech, and survival shows Discovery has to offer.

We are so excited to announce big changes with Sony’s PlayStation Vue service! And what better place to share it than with your need to watch Discovery Channel online. You can resaad our Vue review here. Previously, PlayStation Vue was only available in seven U.S. cities, but they just expanded with a nationwide option that is only $29.99 per month. This “slim” version of the service doesn’t live stream the broadcast networks of ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX, but you can use credentials to access most of these channels on-demand. What it does provide is streaming versions of many popular networks that were only available with a pay TV subscription in the past, such as Discovery.

You can access the Discovery Channel live stream through PlayStation Vue on these devices:

  • PS3/PS4
  • iPad
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Chromecast

You’ll also be able to watch other popular shows and networks like AMC, TLC, and Animal Planet with Vue. Go here to learn more about PlayStation Vue, Discovery Channel live stream, and to sign up!

Watch Discovery Channel Online with Hulu

Many people have replaced regular cable with on-demand services like Hulu (review). The option is affordable and accessible with lots of shows and movies to choose from, so it is no surprise. Hulu gives fans a chance to watch Discovery Channel online, with some of the channel’s most popular shows including:

  • Naked and Afraid
  • Mythbusters
  • Gold Rush
  • Deadliest Catch
  • Man Vs. Wild

Discovery Channel is just one of many networks that share their shows online through Hulu. You’ll have a vast library to choose from. In some cases, you may need a Pay TV login to access the programming, but that isn’t usually a big obstacle for most fans.

Hulu can be streamed through pretty much any device or directly on your computer. For basic Hulu, your cost is only $7.99 per month and includes limited commercials. For a commercial-free experience, you can pay $11.99.

If you want to check it out for yourself, click here to try a free 7-day trial. It’s a great way to watch Discovery Channel online free!

Buy Episodes to Watch Discovery Channel Online

While the only current way to get a Discovery Channel live stream is through PlayStation Vue, there are other options for on-demand content. If you’re not ready to subscribe to a service, you can always buy individual episodes or complete seasons through any number of instant video services. Amazon, Vudu and iTunes are the most popular. In general, this will be a much worse long-term value than a subscription, but you will own the digital content. If you do go this route, the discounted season pass may be your best bet since each individual episode will cost from $2-$3.

Do you feel comfortable with your choices to watch Discovery Channel online? If there are other shows you can’t miss, check out our search page to find out more ways to cut cable out of your life.
