On July 11 at 8 p.m. ET, the 31st annual MLB Home Run Derby kicks off All Star Week at Petco Park in San Diego. It will be a great event with the best players in the MLB coming together in a friendly competition. Last year, the MLB decided to overhaul the Derby’s previous format including the exciting change to remove the rule of batters having a specific amount of outs each round. Now, the Home Run Derby will be a bracket-style tournament with eight hitters receiving five minutes to hit as many home runs as possible. The hitters are rewarded with additional time for home run distance and hitting home runs in the final minute. Want to watch the Home Run Derby online? Here’s
Want to catch all the action online? While the Home Run Derby will be broadcast exclusively by ESPN, there are many great, legal options to watch the MLB Home Run Derby online without cable. Read on for complete Home Run Derby stream details and schedules.
Watch the Home Run Derby Online With Sling TV
Although the event will be broadcast on ESPN, it’s now possible to watch it online, thanks to Sling TV!
If you haven’t heard, Sling TV is a newly launched service backed by Dish Network that allows you to watch live TV over the internet for a great price. Currently, Sling TV is just $20 per month to watch over 25 popular cable channels. The channels include ESPN, ESPN2, AMC, TNT, TBS, HGTV, and many other popular channels. If the low price of $20 per month isn’t enough to convince you to try Sling TV, they are currently offering a free 7-day trial. That means you can stream the Home Run Derby on ESPN using Sling TV without paying a cent.
The 2016 Home Run Derby is sponsored by T-Mobile. And speaking of T-Mobile, if you’re a subscriber of theirs, you can actually score a 30% discount on Sling TV! That brings your monthly cost down to only $14 a month!
Sling TV (full review) was launched with much praise, because it provided a viable option to stream all types of live sporting events, as well as TV shows, news, movies and more. Through the service, subscribers can use an internet connection to stream on their TV using a streaming device, phone, tablet or PC. Pretty much all streaming devices are now compatible with Sling TV. One of the best parts about the service is there’s no contract required, so you can cancel any time you want.
I recommend jumping in to Sling TV right now due to the limited-time offer of the free Roku 2 streaming device. The three-month commitment is minor when you compare it to the cost of an actual cable bill, and whichever streaming device you choose basically pays for itself over the three months while letting you watch the MLB Home Run Derby online right on your TV. If you’re more of an Apple guy, go with the deal for $60 off an Apple TV.
Catch the Home Run Derby Live Stream via PlayStation Vue
Another good option for streaming the 2016 Home Run Derby is PlayStation Vue. This service is pretty similar to Sling TV, offering 50+ channels to subscribers for $30 a month. There are also larger packages if you want more channels.
All of Vue’s channel package options include ESPN, so regardless of which you choose you’ll be able to watch the Home Run Derby live stream. You can watch on your Roku, Chromecast, PS3/PS4, or iOS/Android device. Read our PlayStation Vue review for additional details.
Watch the Home Run Derby Streaming Live With MLB.TV
There are other options to watch a Home Run Derby stream legally. MLB provides its own streaming service, MLB.TV, which will allow you to legally watch the Home Run Derby online. A premium subscription currently costs $24.99 per month or a discounted rate of $79.99 per year, and allows viewers to watch on over 400 supported devices. One note, the prices for the full year usually drop later in the season (at the start of the season, MLB.TV was $129.99 for the year), so now is a great time to get in at a lower price.
MLB.TV gives you the choice between a home or away feed, so if you are watching an MLB game you can choose to listen to your preferred broadcast team. The service also offers live in-game DVR and the ability to concurrently view multiple games. One of the best add-ins for the premium service is a full subscription for MLB’s At Bat mobile application, which works on most Apple, Android, Kindle, and Windows products. Of course, there are blackout restrictions with MLB.TV, so make sure you’re aware of those if you plan on using the service.
Use MLB At Bat to stream the Home Run Derby Live
MLB.com At Bat Premium can be purchased as a standalone product and is a viable option to watch the Home Run Derby streaming on your mobile device. The mobile application provides all a baseball fan needs to follow the MLB. With the app you can watch the free MLB.TV game of the day, receive push notifications on MLB news and in-game updates, and view the key plays and moments from every MLB game. This app is a great low-cost option to watch the Home Run Derby online and only costs $2.99 per month or $19.99 per year. The 2015 Home Run Derby along with every other All-Star Game moment will be live-streamed on the application.
Can You Stream the Home Run Derby for Free on MLB.com?
Last year, MLB.com generously offered an option to stream the Home Run Derby live for free. The stream was available in MLB.com videos section, but it has not been announced if it will be available again this year. The clear downside to the MLB free stream would be the limitation on how to watch the Home Run Derby online. The stream has to be viewed from their website and we are not sure on any compatibility that may be provided. This could limit your ability to watch on your TV or other devices and may not be as high of a quality or user-friendly as the previously provided options.
You definitely won’t want to miss the 2016 Home Run Derby. Ultimately, there are a ton of options available to anyone who wants to watch the Home Run Derby online. If you have any questions about getting a legal Home Run Derby stream, just comment below and I’ll help!
