Watch True Detective Season 2 Online: The Legal Streaming Guide

watch true detective online

Update 7/22/15: Live in the UK? You can watch True Detective online with NOW TV, a streaming service from Sky. Click here for more information.

Update 6/22/15: Don’t forget that while you can watch True Detective live on Sling TV, episodes are also available on demand, usually beginning the same night they air.

True Detective was definitely the biggest surprise show of 2014. Nominated for several Golden Globe awards, the elaborate murder mystery/crime drama basically came out of nowhere, blowing viewers’ and critics’ minds alike. Now season 2 debuts on June 21, 2015, 8 p.m CT, and we’re all waiting on the edge of our seats. Can writer Nic Pizzolatto deliver once again with a completely different star-studded cast featuring Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams?

Luckily, you don’t have to pay for a cable TV subscription to find out. There are legal and inexpensive options available to watch True Detective online. Whether you choose Sling TV (my go-to cable TV alternative) or HBO NOW (currently only available on Apple TV, Android phones and tablets, and Amazon Fire Tablet), you can catch all the season 2 action without breaking the bank. The days of paying for expensive premium cable subscriptions to keep up with hit shows are long gone.

Watch True Detective Online with Sling TV

The best and simplest way to watch True Detective online is with Sling TV. Sling TV is a relatively new service created by Dish Network that allows you to stream a selection of the most popular cable channels at a fraction of the normal price–without a cable subscription. The best part? There’s no contract.

Why is Sling TV the best way to watch True Detective season 2? First of all, they’re currently running a deal where if you sign up for three months of service in advance, you can get a Roku 3 streaming player for 50% off or the Roku Streaming Stick for free. Either way, you can get the stream on your TV at a discounted price. And the three month subscription will take you all the way through True Detective season 2.

Just want to check out the premiere first? Not a problem. You can actually take the service and the show for a test drive before you pay. Sling TV is offering a free 7-day trial which could allow you to watch True Detective online free for the first week.

In fact, you could even binge watch the first season during the 7-day trial if you missed it. Sling’s HBO offering carries a deep catalog of content on demand. Watch on your phone, tablet, computer, or TV (with a streaming device like the Roku).

Have Apple TV? You Can Watch True Detective Season 2 Online with HBO Now

Recently, HBO released their HBO NOW service, which is very similar to HBO GO. The main difference? You don’t need a cable subscription to access HBO NOW. All you need is an Apple device, Android phone or tablet, or Amazon Fire Tablet to download the app and sign up for the service ($15 a month). However, if you want to get the stream on your TV, you’re going to have to get an Apple TV streaming player.

Unfortunately, HBO NOW is not currently available on a number of other popular streaming players. So if you have a Roku, Chromecast, or another streaming player, you’re going to have to wait until at least July 2015 to get HBO NOW.
