All 2017-2018 Utah Jazz Games Will Be Streamed Online Locally

At the start of the 2016-2017 NBA season, the league announced every team would have online streaming in their local market. Thanks to delays with ATT’s acquisition of DirecTV though, three teams were left without options.

One of those is about to change though, as ROOT has announced every Utah Jazz game will be streamed online next season.

Right now, if Utah Jazz fans want to watch the game outside the local market, they’ll have to pony up for the $200 a year League Pass. Locally, watching games either on cable or satellite through ROOT is the only option.

But beginning in the 2017-18 season, Jazz fans will be able to stream their favorite team’s games even if they don’t have a cable subscription. The exact service hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s expected to be either Playstation Vue or DIRECTV NOW.

Both of those streaming television services do have relatively robust sports offerings, with multiple ESPN and Fox Sports networks available, plus several regional sports networks depending on the market. And with basic packages that cost between $35 and $50 a month, it’s not hard to see why people are leaving cable in droves for these alternatives.

Fans that already have a satellite of cable subscription are in luck, as it looks like there will be no additional charge to stream online. ROOT already has a similar deal in place with the MLB, where local fans can stream the action by simply logging in to their provider account. For baseball, the games are streamed via partnership using MLB Advanced Media’s technology, but ROOT is reportedly working on their own setup.

ROOT’s will be broadcasting Jazz games for a while (through the 2020-21 season) thanks to a 12 year deal signed back in 2008 for $240 million. It’s worth noting that ROOT does have a presence in several other cities, like Houston, Denver, and Pittsburgh. Nothing has been announced about a deal for teams in those cities, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
