Watch the British Open Online with Sling TV

Sling TV

The 2016 British Open will be hosted by Golf Channel and NBC. But what if you don’t have cable? How can you access British Open streaming without cable TV? The answer is Sling TV. With Sling TV, you can legally watch both the Golf Channel and NBC online, and it’s live, so you don’t miss any of the coverage.

Sling TV (review here) is a new streaming service created by Dish Network. It allows you to stream a small package of about 20-40+ popular pay TV channels using your internet connection. Sling Blue, one of their popular packages, includes NBC live streaming in select areas, as well as 40+ other great channels – all for just $25 a month. Golf Channel is also available as part of the Sports Extra add-on, which is an additional $5 a month.

So, for $30 a month, you’ll get 45+ channels, including NBC and Golf Channel, who will host the entire 2016 British Open. You’ll also get FS1, History Channel, TBS, AMC, TNT and much more. They currently offer a free 7-day trial, so you can give the service a test drive before watching the British Open live stream. The best part? No contract. You can cancel at any time.

Please note that while Golf Channel and most other channels are available nationwide, NBC is only available in: Dallas, San Diego, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Chicago, New York, Miami, and Hartford.

While you can stream Sling TV on your computer, phone, or tablet, I find that it works best when I can watch on my TV through my Roku 2 streaming player. Don’t have one? Well, right now Sling TV is offering a deal where you can get a free Roku 2 streaming player when you prepay for 3 months of Sling TV. They also offer an exclusive discount on Apple TV devices, if you’re more of an Apple person!

Catch the British Open Live Stream with PlayStation Vue

Playstation Vue

PlayStation Vue provides another way to access British Open streaming. Like Sling TV, it offers both NBC (on-demand only) and Golf channel (live) for its subscribers. These channels are available in the “Core” package, which offers 70+ channels in total for $35 a month.

Vue works on many devices, including PS3 and PS4 consoles, Roku, Chromecast, Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire TV. You won’t be able to watch on the go, as the service is tied to your home location. Learn more in our PlayStation Vue review.

Use an Antenna to Watch the British Open Online Free

antenna DVR combo

If you have an OTA antenna, you can actually watch some of the British Open for free. NBC is an over-the-air channel, which means OTA antennas will pick it up, without a cable subscription. Learn how to find a good antenna here.

You may also want to use a DVR to record the events so that you can watch on your own schedule. Our DVR comparison guide will point you in the right direction.

How to Watch the British Open Online in the UK

Unfortunately, if you are outside of the US, you won’t be able to use Sling TV to watch the British Open online. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t watch without pay TV. For example, if you live in the UK , you can watch the British Open on BBC, which is free to air. However, in 2017, Sky TV, who already shows the US Open and the PGA Championship, will take over the rights.  They offer a no-contract service called NOW TV that will allow you to stream for a fee. You’ll be able to choose between a day pass for £6.99 or a one-week pass for £10.99 (this is the better option if you wish to watch the British Open online in full).
