Comcast Internet Essentials: Cost, Plans, Qualification Details and More

Comcast Internet Essentials

Internet access is something that many take for granted; like the water that comes out of our sink, and the heat that comes out of our furnace. But the reality is that only around 40% of the worlds population has internet access, and even in developed countries like here in the US, millions of families cannot afford to have internet service in their homes. Luckily, there’s a new program that aims to change that, called Comcast Internet Essentials.

Basically, Internet Essentials is a very affordable internet subscription service that allows families who qualify for certain government assistance programs to also obtain Comcast low income internet for around $10 per month. When their average price is $40-$50+ per month, it’s easy to see how many folks just can’t afford the standard Comcast rates. Let’s explore Comcast Essentials to learn more about what this program offers.

Comcast Internet Essentials: What Is It?

Comcast Internet Essentials is low-income internet service that offers in-home internet access and WiFi for just $9.95 per month. It aims to provide low-income families and individuals with the conveniences and advantages that internet supplies, without the high cost of traditional services. The program is operated in a partnership between Comcast and various governmental agencies, including the Housing and Urban Development department. There are some Comcast Internet Essentials eligibility requirements, as discussed below.

Comcast Essentials Eligibility Requirements

In order to sign up for Internet Essentials, you’ll need to qualify first. There are a few different groups of people that may qualify. If you meet any one of these requirements, you should qualify for the service:

  • Individuals receiving HUD Housing Assistance

If you or your family receives HUD Housing Assistance, you have a very good chance of qualifying for Internet Essentials – so long as the program operates in your area.

  • Families with Children in the National School Lunch Program

If your family has at least one child in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), you may qualify for Comcast low-income internet.

In addition to the above requirements, you must a) not have any outstanding debts owed to Comcast that is less than 12 months old, and b) not have had Comcast service within the last 90 days. Additionally, you’ll need to live in an area where Comcast is offered (a list of locations can be found here). You can also search for local internet providers on our site.

Comcast Internet Essentials Trials for Seniors & Students

Currently, this program primarily serves HUD housing assistance recipients and NSLP free lunch assistance recipients. With that said, Comcast has plans to expand the program to also help low-income seniors and community college students. These two programs are currently in a trial phase, so availability is limited – but it’s certainly nice to see Comcast expanding on the program.

Comcast Internet Essentials Plans & Features

So, if you do qualify, what can you expect to get from the program? Here are the basics:

  • $9.95/month + tax
  • No long-term contract required
  • No credit check
  • No installation fee
  • Up to 10mbps internet connection
  • In home WiFi included

In addition, if you qualify for the program you’ll also be eligible to purchase a laptop or desktop computer for only $149.99 + tax. This is not required, but it’s a great deal if you’re in need of a computer.

Comcast Low-Income Internet: Bottom Line
