The crowded streaming television market just got a little more crowded, as a huge fish has jumped in the pond. Going squarely head to head with Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW, Google has announced a new streaming television service that costs just $35 a month.
The service, called YouTube TV, will have about 40 cable networks at launch, and will include content from YouTube Red. All broadcast channels (like NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox) will be a part of the service, as will ESPN, NBC Sports, Fox Sports, USA, FX, Freeform, and dozens of other channels.
Not a part of the service will be TNT, CNN, HGTV, Cartoon Network, and other Turner and Viacom stations.
Likely the most appealing feature at launch is the cloud DVR. Users can record as many shows as they like – there’s absolutely no space limitations – store them up to nine months, and access them anywhere they have an internet connection.
It’s important to note that this service is more SlingTV, and less Netflix, meaning it’s not “on demand” necessarily, and there will be commercials.
Even though more and more people are cutting cable these days (25% of people don’t have a pay TV service), the service is aimed at millennials and young people, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said at the press release event (of course, paying 25% of a cable bill is appealing to anyone). “There’s no question that millennials love great TV content, but what we’ve seen is they don’t want to watch it in the traditional setting.”
YouTube TV should officially launch some time in the next few months. An exact date wasn’t given, but it’s been announced that the service will only be in the largest US cities first, with more being added over time. There’s no plan to take YouTube TV outside of the US at this time.
