As Hulu is preparing to launch their new cable TV competitor – an “under $40” live streaming cable package that will delivery many of the same channels, CEO Mike Hopkins game a glimpse into what kind of content we can expect. And it’s good news for sports fans.
In a new interview with Adweek, Hopkins noted that it was extremely important to get CBS on board. “CBS has the number one network and they have a lot of really great programming,” he said. “We’re going to make this a sports-centric offering, and if you’re going to make that part of your package, you have to have NFL, you have to have the complete March Madness package and all of the other great sports that they have.” Hopkins added that they would of course, have all “big four” broadcasters, but CBS was crucial.
Of course, sports won’t be the only offerings from Hulu’s cable TV alternative. But live sports is one of the things that cable cutters report missing most, so it’s a big deal. It’s even bigger when you realize that competitors Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW (who are already off the ground and running) have a deal with CBS.
Live sports could be one thing that sets Hulu apart in this new battleground. If they can set the bar for what a sports fan wants in their live streaming TV (say, game highlights, archived footage, and exclusive content), they can quickly become the front runner in this area.
In addition to the “live TV” aspect, Hulu’s new service will also incorporate their current library of shows and films, plus add cloud DVR capability.
With an attractive price, nice content library, and industry leading features, Hulu’s streaming TV service is certainly coming in with high expectations. Will it actually live up to them? We’ll know before too long.
