Breaking News: The local blackout has been lifted. You can now watch the 2016 Indy 500 live in Indianapolis!
On Sunday, May 29th, the 2016 Indy 500 will take place on ABC. The actual race begins at 12:00 p.m. ET, but coverage will start early in the morning. One of the most popular auto races of all time, it’s sure to see millions of Americans tuning in to watch. But with a growing segment of the population cutting the cord, many are looking to find an Indy 500 live stream on the internet rather than watch through a cable provider. With that in mind, here’s a quick overview of how you can watch the Indy 500 online.
This year is special, as it will be the 100th running of the legendary Indy 500 race. This is a day you truly won’t want to miss. And luckily, it’s now possible to enjoy an Indy 500 live stream, even without a cable TV subscription! These are your best options:
Sling TV Offers Multiple Options to Watch the Indianapolis 500 Online
Sling TV is a popular streaming service that broadcasts a select group of cable and broadcast channels online through your internet connection, giving you access to ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN3 (the latter offers Indy 500 coverage through the WatchESPN app which you can access with your Sling TV credentials). Additionally, Sling TV carries ABC streaming live in 25% of US television markets, including Chicago, Fresno-Visalia, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham, San Francisco.
With that in mind, Sling TV offers two different ways to watch an Indianapolis 500 live stream. If you live in one of the markets listed above, you can live stream the Indy 500 on ABC. This will give you full live coverage of the event — the same race coverage everyone else will be watching.
But what if you don’t live in one of those markets?
Not to worry, you’ll still be able to live stream Indy 500 coverage with Sling TV. While ABC owns the rights to the Indy 500, it’s simulcast on ESPN3 with 12 in-car camera choices. Now you might be saying, “Wait, I need cable for ESPN!” but that is no longer the case.
To watch the legal Indy 500 live stream on ESPN 3, here’s what you do. Sign up for the service, then download the WatchESPN app. Use your Sling credentials to log into the app. This allows you to watch on your phone or tablet. If you want it on your TV, you can then broadcast it to your TV via a streaming device like the Roku 3 or Amazon Fire TV. Don’t have a Roku? Score one for free when you sign up for 3 months of Sling TV!
You could also go to the ESPN website and log in there. Then you could hook your laptop up to your TV by using an HDMI cable.
Either way, it’s so simple you could sign up right now and be watching in just a few minutes. The process is that quick. Plus, there’s a limited time free 7 day trial of Sling TV!
PlayStation Vue Provides Another Way to Watch Indy 500 Live Stream
PlayStation Vue is another live streaming service that offers a way to watch the Indy 500 online. Like Sling TV, Vue offers an alternative to cable TV with a live streaming package of popular channels. However, ABC is only available live in Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and Dallas with Vue. You will be able to access the WatchESPN app with your Vue credentials for their in-car Indy 500 live stream.
It’s worth noting that Vue does start at a higher price point than Sling TV — $29.99 a month in most markets, $39.99 in markets with live ABC. Additionally, Vue has severe mobile streaming restrictions that prevent you from watching live content on your iPhone and iPad if you’re away from your home network.

Can I Legally Watch the Indy 500 Online for FREE?
Since Sling TV is currently offering a free 7-day trial, that means you can sign up before race day and see the entire Indy 500 live stream for free. It’s a great way to test out Sling TV and see if you like it. If you enjoy watching ESPN online, as well as all the other stations Sling provides, you can continue with the service with no contract for $20 per month.
Keep in mind, you can also prepay three months of Sling TV and get a Roku for free. Read our Sling TV review to learn more.
Are There Any Other Ways to Watch an Indy 500 Live Stream without Cable?
Many people don’t realize that you can get broadcast networks like ABC in HD for free if you live close enough to broadcast towers. All you need is a good antenna. I personally use the Mohu Leaf, but there are other good antennas out there like the ClearStream Eclipse. Not only does it get good reception, but it’s also lightweight and not an eyesore in my living room.
Do Blackouts Affect Ways for Cord Cutters to Watch Indy 500 Online?
We have great news for you. For this year only, the blackout has been lifted! You can now watch the Indy 500 online in Indianapolis. This is the first time in over 50 years that local residents have this opportuntity, so take advantage while you can.
