Lionsgate is Launching Pantaya, the First Spanish-Language Streaming Service

With so much competition in the streaming world, it’s always a surprise to learn that newcomers have entered the market. However, there are still a few niches that have yet to be filled when it comes to streaming video, and some of the savvier media firms are beginning to find ways to carve out their own corner of the streaming market. Case in point: Lionsgate, one of the largest media companies in film and television, is launching a new streaming service aimed at the Spanish-speaking market in the U.S. The service will be called Pantaya and is being hailed as the first Spanish-language streaming video-on-demand service.

Pantaya is a joint project between Lionsgate and Hemisphere Media Group, a media firm specializing in U.S. Hispanic TV/cable networks and content. Media giant Univision will contribute many of their titles to Pantaya’s library, which will consist of classic and contemporary Spanish-language films, documentaries, concerts, and original content. Lionsgate will also bring their diverse catalog of over 16,000 films to Pantaya, each of them dubbed in Spanish.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer says Pantaya is just one more aspect of Lionsgate’s push to provide media for the influential Spanish-language market in the U.S.:

We’re proud to launch a Spanish-language streaming movie service distinguished by its breadth, quality and diversity. This platform is the next logical step in Lionsgate’s track record of serving the Hispanic consumer with high-end premium content through our Pantelion Films venture with Televisa. By drawing upon the blockbuster films, vast libraries and world-class programming resources of its partners, Pantaya is positioned to become a compelling value proposition for Spanish-language and bilingual audiences across the country.

Pantaya will reportedly cost just $5.99 a month and on launch will be compatible with iOS and Android mobile devices, Roku players, as well as web browsers. Pantaya will also be available to Amazon Prime members on Amazon Channels.
