Let’s find you the best way to watch the AFC Championship game. When it comes to watching an NFL game of this caliber, there’s no such thing as being too careful. The last thing you want is to find out that you can’t stream the AFC Championship game on CBS a few minutes before kickoff.
Our goal is to get a reliable, legal stream of CBS to livestream the AFC Championship game. We’ll run through all the best streaming options so you can decide what’s best for your situation.
Guide to livestreaming the AFC Championship
#1 CBS All Access App: Watch the AFC Championship game for cheap
CBS All Access(All-Access)
- Cheapest price to watch CBS content
What we like about it: Costs only $5.99 a month
Drawbacks: Access to only one channel
Who it’s perfect for: Fans looking for the least expensive option
Because of its very reasonable price and great streaming quality, the CBS All Access app is the best way to livestream the AFC Championship. You can even watch the AFC Championship game for free with a CBS All Access 7-day trial.
Pricing and plans for CBS All Access
You can’t argue with that price. Paying $5.99 a month is a noticeable drop from paying upwards of $39.99 a month. Yes, the only channel you’ll be getting is CBS, but that’s the only channel you really need for the AFC Championship. And if you want something to watch after the game, keep in mind you’ll have access to the entire CBS catalog. That equals over 8,500 episodes on demand—a lot of content to chew on.1
If you want to upgrade to a commercial-free plan for on-demand content, you can opt to pay $9.99 a month. Unfortunately the upgraded plan won’t get you out of commercials during live TV, so this won’t affect your AFC Championship viewing experience.
Watching the AFC Championship on CBS All Access
The best part about the CBS All Access app is that it provides coverage in 80% of all markets across the country, and that number is growing all the time. But we still recommend visiting CBS’s website to see if your area gets CBS All Access app coverage.
If you do, buy those chicken wings, order a pizza, and get some drinks ready because you know you can watch the AFC Championships live. You don’t even need to worry about CBS Sports app access—you get all of that content on the CBS All Access app as well. You won’t be missing out on any content by opting for the All Access app.
Don’t forget that CBS also carries Saturday college football games and the NCAA March Madness tournament, so you’ll probably find the app useful even after the AFC Championship game. And if you don’t, no worries—like all streaming services, CBS All Access subscription runs on a no-contract, monthly basis so you can cancel anytime.
We recommend taking advantage of the 7-day free trial to see what you think of the service.
What devices can I stream CBS All Access on?
CBS All Access does a great job making its service available on essentially every streaming device.
#2 PlayStation Vue: Tons of CBS coverage, plus other great channels
Playstation Vue(Access Package)
- Fantastic CBS streaming quality
What we like about it: Best CBS coverage out there currently
Drawbacks: A little expensive
Who it’s perfect for: Fans looking for the most complete option
If you don’t like the idea of streaming only CBS shows, you can watch the AFC Championships with PlayStation Vue and enjoy tons of other great channels. You can try out PlayStation Vue with a trial and even watch the AFC Championship game for free while you’re at it.
Prices and plans for PlayStation Vue
To watch the AFC Championships online, you can opt for the least expensive PlayStation Vue package. The Access package, which costs $39.99 a month, includes CBS as well as other great channels like ESPN, TNT, and other local channels. Most importantly, PlayStation Vue offers the most local coverage for CBS, so if you’re aiming to stream the AFC Championships with more channels than CBS All Access would get you, your best bet is PlayStation Vue.
Watching the AFC Championship on PlayStation Vue
We’ve tested pretty much every streaming service out there and can confirm that PlayStation Vue offers the highest quality livestream available. After watching for several hours, the stream consistently stayed fluid and current. That being said, we can’t say we loved the stream with DVR content. For whatever reason, after watching something we recorded, the stream became much more choppy than it would have been live. Our internet exceeded the minimum recommendation of 5 Mbps, so it feels safe to assume that this is an issue on PlayStation Vue’s part.
Considering you’re probably going to want to watch the game live, you won’t need to worry about the cloud DVR. But in case you’re curious, PlayStation Vue does come with unlimited cloud DVR storage in your subscription price, which is nice, but your content lasts for only 28 days, and that’s not so nice.
PlayStation Vue device compatibility
You can watch PlayStation Vue on, you guessed it, PlayStation consoles. But it’s also on plenty of other devices.
#3 Hulu with Live TV: Solid CBS coverage and binge-watching
Hulu Live TV(Limited Commercials)
- CBS streaming along with on-demand content
What we like about it: Ease of watching CBS and binge-watching favorite shows
Drawbacks: No channel upgrades currently
Who it’s perfect for: Fans who enjoy live and on-demand content
As a fan, it’s nice to know that you can drown your sorrows by binge-watching a great show if your team loses. Luckily, Hulu with Live TV offers that sweet escape if you don’t like the outcome of the AFC Championship. See what we’re talking about with Hulu Live TV’s free 7-day trial.
Prices and plans for Hulu with Live TV
Hulu with Live TV is making a splash in the streaming world by combining its new live TV streaming service with access to its on-demand streaming library for $39.99 a month. Granted, that is more expensive than some of the competition, but if you want to watch the AFC Championship and think you’d like Hulu’s streaming library (or are already paying for it), then this may be a good pick for you.
On the other hand, if you’re not interested in Hulu’s streaming library, then you’ll end up paying quite a bit for content you won’t use. If your main focus is watching the NFL, you’ll be better off spending your money elsewhere. There are cheaper options to watch the AFC Championship.
Watching the AFC Championship on Hulu with Live TV
Hulu may be a master of streaming on-demand content, but it’s not quite there with streaming live content. While watching, we experienced a few frame hitches where the stream would pause for a few seconds and then catch up. A few seconds may not sound like much, but who knows—you may miss the fateful seconds where a hail mary pass wins the game. Personally, we’re not willing to risk something like that. We say aim for an internet speed of at least 5 Mbps to get the best-quality stream, but, of course, faster is always better.
Package Hulu’s on-demand content with the 50 hours of cloud DVR storage, and Hulu with Live TV makes for a pretty good deal.
Hulu with Live TV device compatibility
You can stream the AFC Championships on almost any device using Hulu with Live TV.
#4 DIRECTV NOW: Lots of channels but not much CBS coverage
DIRECTV NOW(Live a Little)
- Channel variety for everyone to enjoy
What we like about it: Lots of channels for not much money
Drawbacks: Weak CBS Coverage
Who it’s perfect for: Fans looking for channel variety
Your fourth-place option for watching the AFC Championship game is DIRECTV NOW. If you’re lucky enough to be able to stream CBS in your area using DIRECTV NOW, then it’s a great choice for watching the AFC Championship. The trick, of course, comes down to availability. The best way to know for sure if you can stream CBS in your area is to sign up for the 7-day DIRECTV NOW free trial.
Prices and plans for DIRECTV NOW
DIRECTV NOW, in our opinion, has the best channel offerings in its basic Live a Little package. includes CBS, ESPN, FOX (which means you can watch the NFC championship, too), TNT, and over 60 other solid channels. So you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck at $35 a month.
Of course, the catch here is that there’s no guarantee that CBS will be available in your market. Considering DIRECTV NOW offers CBS in only 15 markets across the country, chances are you’ll be out of luck—which is why the service is so low down on this list.
If you like the idea of enjoying tons of channels without cable but want to livestream the AFC Championships, you could always bundle your DIRECTV NOW subscription with CBS All Access. The combined monthly fee would be only a dollar more than PlayStation Vue or Hulu with Live TV.
Watching the AFC Championships with DIRECTV NOW
As reviewers, we try to test streaming services to their limits, and we found that DIRECTV NOW does have some bugs that need working out.
Every once in awhile, the streaming picture would get fuzzy for a few seconds, the audio would delay, and on rare occasions the system would crash altogether. It’s likely you won’t experience those same issues, especially if you’re watching for only a few hours at a time and don’t skip around channels or inputs too often.
Also, bad news, DIRECTV NOW currently doesn’t offer any form of cloud DVR. That will likely change soon, but probably not before the big game.
DIRECTV NOW device compatibility
Enjoy streaming AFC Championship game online with any of these devices.
#5 fuboTV: Livestream the AFC Championship game plus other sports channels
- Unique sports channels offered
What we like about it: Unique sports channels
Drawbacks: Missing ESPN and weak CBS coverage
Who it’s perfect for: Fans who love both football and soccer
fuboTV is relatively new to the live TV scene, forming in 2015, but before you commit to anything, we highly recommend checking out the fuboTV trial, and if you time it right, you can watch the AFC Championships for free.
Prices and plans for fuboTV
Making things much easier, fuboTV offers only one English channel package —so you won’t need to deal with the anxiety of deciding on a package. You’ll get CBS, as well as other nonconventional streaming channels like the Pac-12 Network, the Olympic Channel, and FOX Soccer Plus. However, its CBS coverage is currently very weak, so make sure to do the fuboTV 7-day free trial to make sure you can stream the AFC Championship game in your area.
Here’s some good news—if you’re concerned about the price, fuboTV offers a promotional starter price for new subscribers. Your first two months will cost $19.99 per month, which makes for a great opportunity to really feel out the service and see what you think. After the first two months, the price jumps to $39.99 a month going forward.
Watching the AFC Championships on fuboTV
Considering fuboTV is relatively new to the world of live television, it makes sense that it can’t quite compete with the other services yet when it comes to streaming quality. That doesn’t mean the streaming is anything close to unwatchable, but you’ll likely experience dips in quality resulting in a fuzzy picture or delayed stream.
However, if you have an internet speed above 5 Mbps and watch for only a few hours at a time, there’s a good chance you’ll have few issues with streaming the AFC Championships on fuboTV.
One nice perk is that fuboTV comes with 30 hours of cloud DVR storage included in your subscription at no extra cost, so you can record games and watch them later. You could even record and then watch the AFC Championship game free of commercials that way.
fuboTV device compatibility
Here are the devices you can stream the AFC Championship game on with fuboTV.
#6 Wildcard: Antenna
Buying an antenna might just be the simplest solution to watching the AFC Championship game—the key word being “might.”
If you live in fairly close proximity to a television broadcast tower, an antenna could be perfect for you. You still run the risk of a lower picture quality and spotty service (especially in inclimate weather), but if you’re in the broadcast tower’s sweet spot, you’ll enjoy the AFC Championship game with no hassle and no recurring, monthly fees. You can even stream the NFC Championship game and Super Bowl with an antenna—if NBC is carried by your local station.
The thing about antennas is that they’re restricted to TV sets. So, if you prefer watching on mobile devices like phones, tablets, or computers, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
If you think an antenna fits your watching needs, don’t worry—we’ve already written up a guide on picking the right antenna, too. You can see our top recommendations here. Spoiler alert: this is our favorite antenna for most people.
#7 Wildcard: CBS Sports App
It’s true—CBS has an app that you can use to stream the AFC Championship. The only problem is that there’s an extremely limited number of providers that allow you to use the app. Strangely enough, fuboTV and Hulu are the only services on this list that authenticate with the app.
