When Olympic Swimming comes to mind, most likely, Michael Phelps also comes to mind. This dominant American athlete has performed so well in his career that he’s widely considered to be one of the best swimmers alive today. He will compete in the 2016 Olympic Games, and you may be wondering how you can watch Michael Phelps online during the Rio Olympic Games.

If you do not have cable any more, there are still ways to catch a Michael Phelps live stream. In fact, this will be the first major Olympics where cable is really not required to enjoy the Games. Wondering how to stream Michael Phelps races online this summer? Here’s how:

Use Sling TV to Enjoy Michael Phelps Live Stream

Sling TV

The easiest way to access Michael Phelps streaming during the Olympic Games will be to use a service called Sling TV. Sling TV is an affordable, legal alternative to expensive cable packages. It provides a lot of the benefits of having cable TV, without the expense or commitment.

Sling TV costs only $25 a month for their “Sling Blue” package. This package will be invaluable for watching the Olympics online, because it includes NBC, NBCSN, USA, Bravo, and 40+ other channels. Most Olympic Swimming events will fall on either NBCSN (the most coverage), NBC (second best) and USA (least coverage). Since all three of these channels are included in Sling TV’s package, you will have no trouble watch Michael Phelps online during the Games.

One thing to take note of is that NBC is only available in certain areas. The other channels are available nationwide. And, as stated, NBCSN will host the most Olympic events of any network, and it is available nationwide.

If you’re considering signing up for Sling TV, keep in mind that if you prepay for 3 months in advance, you’ll be able to get either a steeply discounted Apple TV or a completely free Roku 2. Both of these devices will let you stream Michael Phelps races directly on your TV. Or, you can watch on smart TVs, computers, mobile devices and other streaming players. See our Sling TV review for the full device and channel list.

You can also try the service out for free with Sling TV’s free 7-day trial period.

Use PlayStation Vue to Watch Michael Phelps Online

Playstation Vue

PlayStation Vue is another service that will be useful for watching Olympic Swimming online. This service, offered by Sony, includes 50+ channels for a $30/month pricetag. In terms of Olympics coverage, it offers the same as Sling TV: NBSCN, NBC (on-demand only), and USA.

Vue works on select devices only, and mobile viewing is restricted for the most part. You can read about the details of this new service in our PlayStation Vue review.

Use Your Antenna to Watch Some Olympic Swimming for Free

What’s better than watching Michael Phelps dominate the Games? How about watching the Michael Phelps live stream, for free!

Since NBC is an over the air channel, and since NBC will host several Olympic Swimming events, it’s actually possible to catch some coverage completely free. You’ll need a high quality over-the-air antenna (see our guide to the best antennas), and you’ll need to be in range of your local NBC affiliate. A DVR is also useful, although not required. If you use a good DVR, you can watch on your own schedule.

Live Outside the USA? You Can Still Access Michael Phelps Streaming

Non-US residents will not be able to use the services detailed above to watch the Olympic Games online. However, there are other options. One way to catch a Michael Phelps live stream is to use a VPN. Read more about how this works here.

Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time, holding an incredible 22 medals. This year, he is to receive an entirely new honor as he has been chosen as a Captain for Team USA. Fans worldwide are hoping for some more incredible Phelps performances, and I have a feeling Michael has that same explosive power in store for all of us this summer!
