Across our collection of television show and specials guides, you’ve undoubtedly seen us talk about the Mohu Leaf 50. We’ve said it’s a digital antenna, but we’ve never really gone into detail on what exactly that means, what it does or how much it costs. So we decided to give you a proper review, to really get down to the nitty-gritty so you can make an informed decision on it.
Continue on to read our in-depth Mohu Leaf 50 review.
What exactly is the Mohu Leaf 50?
For those of you that haven’t heard of it yet, the Mohu Leaf 50 is a digital antenna that has a range of 50 miles uninhibited. That means that any local channel broadcasting within a 50 mile radius can be picked up and displayed right to your TV. Keep in mind, this is in the average instance, as obstacles can sometimes inhibit signals.
With that being said, it’s the one digital antenna on the market we feel is the most reliable and aesthetically pleasing.
Mohu Leaf 50 Review: Design and Features
The appearance of the Mohu Leaf 50 is a fairly large part of the appeal of the antenna. The sleek and slim design was created by former military antenna engineers, and features two different colored sides — one being white and the other being black. This allows it to easily match almost any home decor, without being an eyesore. Even if you didn’t want it on display, you could easily hide it behind just about anything.
Out of the box, you’ll be getting the device itself, a detachable coax cable, and Mohu’s Jolt-powered amp. Everything you’ll need to enjoy HDTV without going through a cable company.
As we said in the design section, the Mohu Leaf 50 is colored white on one side and black on the other to have a better chance at blending with your decor. You can easily mount it on the wall with a couple tacks or velcro sticky tape, or really anything you’d prefer as long as it doesn’t impede reception; but that’s all there is to it thanks to it’s multi-directional capabilities.
Apart from the ‘free network TV’ benefit that comes with owning a Mohu Leaf 50, there are a couple other key features that many may underplay. The design again keeps it from being a complete eye sore like bunny ears. Compared to the size of other high quality digital antennas it’s a far cry smaller and better. A disadvantage of many of the metal ones is the narrow range due to reflectors on the back (like the DB4 antenna), and Mohu fixed that.
The Price: Is it worth it?
One of the best things about this paper-thin machine is the price – compared to paying for cable month after month, let’s just say it’s a relief. One brand new Mohu Leaf 50 will cost $69.99, but you can also find other deals and specials online at places like Amazon or EBay from time to time as well — the cheapest we’ve seen it is around $30-40. Overall, we’d definitely say it’s something at least worth looking into if you’re tired of seeing the same large numbers rolling in from your cable bill.
TL;DR: Mohu Leaf 50 Review Summary
So the good things about the Mohu Leaf 50 are the design, the 50 mile reception radius, multi-directional capabilities, and the inexpensive cost; the downsides are that the radius shrinks around many obstacles and if you’re living in ‘the middle of nowhere’ you may not be able to find any signals at all — but that’s an issue with any antenna.

With more benefits than limitations, in our opinion it’s by far one of the best choices a cable cutter can make. Questions about our Mohu Leaf 50 review? Leave a comment!
