Netflix Raises Its Monthly Prices for Subscribers in Canada

Netflix caused quite a ruckus when they raised prices in Australian markets earlier this year – well, as much of a ruckus as can be raised on internet message boards, that is. When Aussie Reddit users got wind of the price hikes, users took to the social link sharing site to blast Netflix and threaten to cancel their subscriptions. When Netflix raised prices in the U.S. last year, however, the streaming giant saw an immediate and significant boost in subscribers over the last year – although that was more likely due to the release of Stranger Things and other hit original series soon after the hikes. Now, many Netflix users are returning to comment sections and forms to vent their anger over the latest price hikes – this time in Canada.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported the price hikes, pointing out that the new prices are effective immediately for new members throughout Canada and that existing subscribers will be notified by email in the coming weeks before their subscriptions go up. Netflix’s standard plan in Canada will now cost $10.99 a month, the basic single screen streaming plan will go up to $8.99, and the premium plan featuring support for four simultaneous streams and 4K content will raise to $13.99 a month in Canada.

For their part, Netflix released a statement justifying the price raise, saying that it was necessary in order to provide customers in Canada with the best possible streaming experience:

From time to time, Netflix plans and pricing are adjusted as we add more exclusive TV shows and movies, introduce new product features and improve the overall Netflix experience, to help members find something great to watch even faster.

Similar outrage was lobbed at the streaming leader when Netflix changed its rating system and when pre-roll trailers began appearing before selected content for some users. Netflix issued a statement claiming they were testing the trailers to see how members would respond. If these moments of customer satisfaction show anything, it’s that Netflix users don’t like any changes to their service.
