Back in January, Roku reps promised they would have compatibility with DIRECTV NOW “in the next few weeks.” That time frame came and went with no news, so the release date was pushed back to March 31. That time passed with no word as well, but it looks like we’re finally getting some action on that front.
AT&T announced today that the new DIRECTV NOW Roku channel is available nationwide. There is a small catch, though: only on certain devices. Roku TV 4K models are included, as is the Roku Ultra and the Roku Premiere+, plus the Roku Premiere, the Roku Express, the Roku Express+, the Roku Streaming Stick (model 3600R), the Roku 4, the Roku 3 and the Roku 2 (model 4210). So while it’s not all Roku devices, it does appear to be most of them.
A one month free trial of DIRECTV NOW is being offered to all Roku customers who don’t already have a DIRECTV NOW subscription.
That means DIRECTV NOW is now available on virtually all the major streaming players, including Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV and Chromecast.
Brad Bently, AT&T’s Entertainment’s executive vice president and CMO, said “Roku is a leader in streaming entertainment and millions of homes in the U.S. have Roku devices. DIRECTV NOW is about bringing customers entertainment their way, so launching on the Roku platform was an important part of our strategy.”
On their end, it seems Roku is just as excited about the news. “AT&T’s robust DIRECTV NOW service is an incredible offer for our customers who expect premium streaming entertainment at a great value,” said the company’s general manger of content and services, Steve Shannon, “Getting consumers to the content they want the most has always been our focus.”
No word was given on why the rollout took so long, but most experts think it was due to unforeseen technical glitches.
