Hulu Announces Lower Price for New Customers

Earlier this week, streaming service Hulu debuted a limited time deal that allows new customers to enjoy Hulu service for just $5.99 per month for the first 12 months—down from the service’s typical $7.99 per month price tag.

Considering that just last week Netflix announced it would be raising prices on all its plans, this deal from Hulu is yet another indicator that Hulu is positioning itself as a more affordable, well-rounded alternative to its competitor.

This news also comes on the heels of Hulu’s recent acquisition of streaming rights to a number of popular ‘90s shows. Through a recent deal with Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution, Hulu now offers every episode from all five shows in ABC’s classic “TGIF” lineup, including Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step, Perfect Strangers, Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper. Plus, the service recently announced it would be acquiring rights to popular Disney shows Boy Meets World, Home Improvement, and Dinosaurs.

Hulu’s press release states, “The news emphasizes Hulu’s commitment to bringing together some of the most iconic and popular series throughout the years, all on one platform.” In other words, this deal makes Hulu a more direct competitor to streaming giant Netflix and a one-stop shop for anyone looking for their ‘90s-era nostalgia fix.
