Hulu Is Reportedly In Talks To Stream HBO Content

Hulu has been stepping up its efforts in the streaming wars lately, launching a live TV package and scoring critical acclaim with several of its recent original series. According to some recent online rumors, Hulu might me attempting to gain another advantage on the rest of the streaming market by moving into premium cable offerings. According to The New York Post, Hulu is in talks with HBO to begin streaming HBO content. The Post reports the two firms are in “late stage talks” which could see Hulu become a new home for some of HBO’s most in-demand content.

While The New York Post story does not cite any sources, some recent developments at Hulu corporate might imply that there could be some truth to the rumor. Time Warner Inc., who owns HBO parent company Home Box Office, Inc., bought a 10% minority stake in Hulu last year for $6 billion. A deal to bring HBO content to Hulu would be in the best interests of both companies; Hulu could likely see a massive subscription boost with the addition of HBO original series like Westworld and Game of Thrones, while HBO stands to gain viewers (and ad revenue) through placing their content in front of Hulu’s 12 million plus subscribers.

HBO already has streaming deals with Amazon Prime, DIRECTV NOW, and the PlayStation Vue network. In addition, HBO can be streamed through the HBO Now app available on Roku and Apple TV or through web browsers.

Time Warner, HBO, and Hulu are still silent on the deal – if the New York Post report is true at all.
