PlayStation Vue subscribers in 17 new markets will be able to watch their local Fox affiliate live starting this week.
The streaming television market has become incredibly crowded in the past few months, and local networks have quickly become a crucial point. Since most skinny bundles have basically the same cable channels for about the same price, not having local channels can be a breaking point. In fact, securing rights with CBS and FOX was one of the first moves that Hulu made with their new TV service.
And if there’s one thing PlayStation Vue is doing right, it’s securing these local affiliates.
17 new local FOX stations being added to Vue, including:
FOX 61 in Hartford & New Haven, Connecticut
FOX 28 in Columbus, Ohio
FOX 31 in Denver
FOX 13 in Seattle-Tacoma
FOX 2 in St. Louis
FOX 17 in Nashville, Tennessee
FOX 59 in Indianapolis
FOX 4 in Kansas City, Missouri
FOX 5 in San Diego
FOX in San Antonio
FOX 53 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
FOX 12 in Portland, Oregon
FOX 40 in Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto
FOX 6 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
FOX 13 in Salt Lake City
FOX 45 in Baltimore
FOX 8 in Cleveland-Akron (Canton)
This comes after Vue adding almost 30 local CBS affiliates earlier this year. The addition of FOX means they have the rights to all of the “Big Four” networks within the first year of their launch, something most skinny bundles can’t claim.
It’s clear that there’s a lot at play for local affiliates when it comes to streaming TV services. Some are choosing to go the full live route, while some go the “available next day on demand” route, diverting viewers to their own app or site for a live stream.
And while we’re nowhere near everyone having streaming access to all of their local channels, we are moving in a good direction. And as more are added, cable alternatives will only continue to grow.
