Stargate is Returning with a New Series and Streaming Service

Science fiction fans got a massive dose of excitement at this year’s San Diego Comic Con thanks to a major announcement by MGM. The media distribution giant has announced that it is bringing back the beloved Stargate franchise for a brand new series which will debut on a new Stargate streaming service. The series will be called Stargate Origins and will serve as a prequel to the other Stargate series and films.

The announcement coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Stargate-SG-1 TV series. At this year’s Comic Con, MGM released the trailer for the upcoming ten-episode digital series, beginning with the question “What if you didn’t know the whole story?” The trailer depicts 20th-century archaeologists in Egypt uncovering and erecting what could be one of the first Stargates, accompanied by the text “Go back to where it all began.” Stargate Origins will reportedly revolve around the character Catherine Langford, daughter of recurring Stargate character Professor Paul Langford. The new series is written by Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry and directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan.

Kevin Conroy, President of Digital & New Platforms at MGM, told Deadline that the new series is a love note to fans and part of MGM’s recent similar efforts to bring its extensive library of content to the streaming world:

We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure. We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with Stargate Origins.

Stargate Origins will premiere on Stargate Command, a new streaming service dedicated exclusively to Stargate content. The streaming video-on-demand service will carry the three Stargate feature films, four TV series (including Stargate Origins), and the animated Stargate Infinity series. In addition, the Stargate Command service is expected to feature exclusive behind-the-scenes content, commentaries, and features from the wide world of Stargate fandom.
