More US Households Now Have Netflix Than Have A DVR

New numbers show just how popular streaming television has become. For the first time in history, more people in the US subscribe to Netflix than own a DVR.

The numbers come from Leichtman Research Group, a company that analyzes trends in home entertainment. Around 54 percent of American adults today have Netflix, the company said, compared to 53 percent who have a DVR. Of course, if you count only the number of people who have pay television service, the number of people with a DVR rises to about 65 percent.

That’s a stark contrast from 2011, when the numbers were 28 percent and 44 percent respectively. The numbers are more incredible when you consider that DVRs have been around for just under 20 years, with the video streaming side of Netflix turning 10 this year.

And Netflix is showing no sign of slowing their growth, either. At the end of 2016, they had an estimated subscriber base of almost 50 million people in America – a growth of over 10% from the previous year. The survey also showed remarkable growth in how people use Netflix. Nearly 25% of of Netflix subscribers say they stream daily, compared to 6% of daily users in 2011.

It’s not just Netflix that’s on the rise, either. According to LRG, almost 65% of homes get streaming video from Hulu, Amazon or Netflix, and 51% of adults stream from any one of those services every month.

These numbers don’t tell us anything we don’t already know, but they do show how Netflix is shaking up the entertainment industry. Cable television will still be around for quite a while, but streaming video has certainly put a dent in the market. Especially if streaming providers like Netflix and Hulu can keep producing quality content of their own while still providing access to traditional cable shows, it’s a trend we can expect to keep going on.
