Most college football fans prefer an offensive shootout to a defensive battle, especially in this era of up-tempo spread offenses. North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Baylor Bears Preview
How motivated will North Carolina be to play in this game? The Heels (11-2) took an 11-game winning streak into the ACC Championship Game and gave top-ranked and unbeaten Clemson all it could handle in a 45-37 loss. UNC got hosed when it came to the referees as after scoring a touchdown with 1:13 remaining to make it a one-possession game, the Tar Heels recovered the ensuing onside kick. However, they were called for offside, even though replays showed no UNC player was so. Had North Carolina not been penalized, tied and then won the game, it would have played in a New Year’s Six bowl at a minimum and perhaps in the College Football Playoff.
North Carolina is led by senior quarterback Marquise Williams, who has thrown for 2,829 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for 867 yards and 11 scores. The Heels also have one of the country’s best running backs in Elijah Wood, who rushed 206 times for 1,345 yards and an ACC-best 17 touchdowns. UNC leads the country in yards per play and is 11th in points per game (40.9 per game).
Baylor (9-3) was a preseason favorite to win the Big 12 along with TCU. And the Bears looked the part of a national championship contender until starting quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Seth Russell was lost for the season in an Oct. 24 win over Iowa State. Then backup Jarrett Stidham suffered his own injury that knocked him out of the final two games. Baylor had to turn to former receiver Chris Johnson under center and he struggled — then got hurt himself in the finale against Texas. It was so bad in the loss to the Longhorns that Baylor coach Art Briles ran the single wing in the third and fourth quarters.
So it’s not clear who plays QB here, although the team is hopeful Stidham will be able to return. He broke a bone in his foot Nov. 21. Johnson will be healthy. Baylor still led the nation in total offense (605.0 yards per game) and in scoring (48.0 ppg).
UNC and Baylor didn’t play any common opponents during the season. The Heels have lost five of their past seven bowl games. Baylor has lost two straight postseason games.
