#1 Sling TV: A Lot of Bang for Your Buck If You Can Get ABC

What We Like: The affordability

Drawbacks: Limited ABC offerings without antenna

Who It’s Perfect for: Viewers who want a variety of programming in addition to Grey’s Anatomy

Sling TV is our #1-rated streaming service for watching Grey’s Anatomy. Despite its limited ABC availability, it offers an unbeatable price and a free method for watching any local channels that aren’t included with your service. Overall, it’s the best way to get Grey’s plus other entertainment you love.

Sling TV Delivers Affordable Pricing

As far as pricing goes, Sling TV definitely falls on the low end of the spectrum. Basic service starts at just $20 per month, but if you live in an area where ABC is available, you’ll need to get the Broadcast Extra add-on for an additional $5 per month to watch Grey’s Anatomy. That rounds out the total cost of your package to $25 per month, which is still a pretty great deal considering that streaming services typically cost a minimum of $35 a month.

Get Sling TV’s Free Antenna to Watch Grey’s Anatomy

The one downside of Sling TV is the fact that the service offers ABC in only eight markets nationwide. So unless you live in one of those eight markets, you won’t be able to get ABC directly through your Sling TV service.

Sling TV does make up for this, however, by offering a free Winegard indoor antenna to customers who can’t access local channels via their Sling TV service. That allows you to catch Grey’s Anatomy episodes live while still enjoying access to tons of other channels.

Keep in mind that while getting a free antenna is a great deal, it isn’t for everyone. If you’re watching Grey’s via an antenna, you’re pretty much stuck watching it live. You should also keep in mind that you need to pre-pay for two months of service to get the free antenna. So if you want a way to record ABC shows or can’t afford to pay $50 for your service all at once, you may want to consider another option on our list.

DVR Service Available for an Extra Cost

Frankly, Sling TV’s DVR option is pretty average. It costs an extra $5 per month, and it includes 50 hours’ worth of cloud-based storage. It can handle recording multiple shows at once, but is not available on all channels. If you wind up needing to take advantage of the antenna deal to get ABC, you won’t be able to record Grey’s Anatomy without purchasing an additional device (more on that below).

Sling TV Device Compatibility

One of the biggest perks of Sling TV is the fact that it’s available on so many devices. However, it does fall a little short when it comes to gaming consoles, as it’s available only on the Xbox One.

  • Amazon Fire TV

#2 Digital Antenna: ABC Access Without Monthly Fees or Blackouts

antenna DVR comboWhat We Like: No monthly costs & unrestricted access to ABC

Drawbacks: No on-demand or DVR options without additional purchases

Who It’s Perfect for: Viewers on a budget who don’t mind watching Grey’s Anatomy live

Another option for watching Grey’s Anatomy without a cable package is to buy a digital antenna. These days, antennas are sleek and unobtrusive, so they don’t look out of place in your home. And with an antenna, you can watch your local ABC, NBC, FOX, and CBS affiliates without having to pay a monthly rate.

If you’re looking to get an antenna, we highly recommend the Mohu Leaf 50. However, the right antenna for your needs will vary depending on your household. Be sure to check out our antenna buyer’s guide to see what will work best for your home.

Digital Antenna Pricing

Depending on the model you choose, your upfront cost for a new antenna can be as low as $30. However, cord-cutters in remote locations may need to splurge on a more expensive, outdoor antenna to pick up local channels, which could drive the cost up to $450.

Even if you wind up needing to buy a more advanced (and therefore more expensive) antenna, it’s still a good investment. With an antenna, you don’t need to pay for monthly subscriptions—once you buy the antenna, you get free access to locally broadcast stations. That makes it an affordable option for anyone looking to save on their monthly expenses.

Watching Grey’s Anatomy with an Antenna

With an antenna, you get access to all your local ABC affiliate programming, which basically guarantees that you’ll be able to watch every episode of Grey’s Anatomy. The downside: antennas deliver live TV with no on-demand options. While that means you can watch Grey’s live without waiting for the latest episode to show up on demand, it also means you have very little flexibility as far as the days and times when you can watch the Grey Sloan Memorial crew.

There are ways around this (see our DVR section below), but they will cost you extra. So if you’re alright with making sure you’re in front of your TV at exactly 8/7c every Thursday night, then an antenna may be just right for you. But if you’re looking for something with a little more flexibility to match your schedule, you may want to consider either adding a DVR service or signing up for a streaming option that offers on-demand and/or DVR options.

DVR Isn’t Standard, But You Can Add One

Antennas are typically used just for live TV. However, adding a DVR is an option if you can’t tune in every Thursday night. Devices like the TiVo Bolt® give you the benefits of a DVR without the ultra-expensive price tag you get with a cable package. It will cost you more up front (the Bolt retails for $199.99), and some devices also require you to subscribe to a monthly service. Even with this add-on, however, you could easily wind up paying less per month than you would with cable or even a streaming service.

Antenna Compatibility

If you opt for an antenna, all you have to do is hook it up to your TV. You may even be able to connect it to one of your other video playing devices, though some require an adapter. Consult your device’s manual to see if your antenna is compatible.

#3 DIRECTV NOW: Decent Entertainment Options at an Average Price

What We Like: Widespread ABC access and device compatibility

Drawbacks: So far, no DVR

Who It’s Perfect for: Grey’s Anatomy fans who want lots of entertainment options and don’t mind the lack of DVR

When it comes to watching ABC programming, we feel that DIRECTV NOW ranks around the middle of the pack. Price-wise, it’s not as budget-friendly as Sling TV, but it’s still more affordable than PlayStation Vue. And while DIRECTV NOW features more widespread ABC availability than Sling TV, it currently doesn’t offer a DVR feature.

Average Pricing

DIRECTV NOW packages start at $35 per month for basic packages. That gets you 60+ channels, with premium channels available for just $5 more per month each. While that’s fairly average compared to other streaming services, it’s still a steal of a deal when you consider how much you’d pay for the same channel count on a traditional cable package.

Most DIRECTV NOW Customers Can Watch Grey’s Anatomy

Not all areas get a live ABC feed, so be sure to check out the DIRECTV NOW channel lookup to see whether your local ABC affiliate is available. If you’re not able to watch it live, you can also watch Grey’s Anatomy on demand for a limited time after the episode’s air date.

No DVR Service Currently Available

One of the biggest downsides to DIRECTV NOW service (and the reason we ranked it #3) is the service’s lack of DVR. Cloud-based DVR service is relatively standard for other streaming services, so DIRECTV NOW is definitely behind the times. However, users have been reassured that DVR service is coming at some point in the future, so it may still end up being the best service for you.

Of course, DIRECTV NOW does offer on-demand streaming of recent episodes, so whether or not you get a DVR may be a moot point. However, if you’re looking for a way to record episodes and save them for more than a few days after they air, you may want to choose another service.

DIRECTV NOW Device Compatibility

DIRECTV NOW can be streamed on the majority of popular devices, though it is not yet available on gaming devices.

  • Roku

#4 Hulu Live: Tons of Live and On-Demand Programming for a Slightly Higher Price

What We Like: The variety of entertainment options

Drawbacks: A little more expensive

Who It’s Perfect for: Fans who want to watch Grey’s Anatomy and all their favorite shows on their own schedule

While it’s true that Hulu Live costs a little more than average, it more than makes up for it with its extensive programming options. In addition to the standard ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX programming, Hulu also offers live streams from other major channels like ESPN and the Disney Channel. Plus, you get access to Hulu’s original programming and tons of on-demand shows and movies. We think that makes it totally worth the higher price tag, though it might not be right for everyone.

How Much Is Hulu Live?

Hulu Live plans start at $39.99 per month, which makes the service a little more expensive than the current average. The basic plan gets you live streams of local channels (where available) and limited commercials. Or, for $4 more per month, you can upgrade to the No Commercials plan.

Watching Grey’s Anatomy on Hulu Live

Hulu Live has partnered with tons of local stations to provide live streams, but your ability to watch Grey’s Anatomy live will depend on your area and Hulu’s agreement with your local station. If watching the episodes as they air is important to you, we highly recommend checking out Hulu’s live channel availability before signing up.

Fortunately, in areas where live ABC streaming is unavailable, you can still access full episodes of Grey’s Anatomy on demand. And as mentioned above, you can also upgrade to the No Commercials plan and watch Grey’s Anatomy online, free of commercials.

Hulu Live’s DVR Service

All Hulu Live plans automatically include 50 hours of cloud-based DVR service, so if you’re unable to watch Grey’s as it airs, you do have the option to record it and save it for later. Plus, if your family is made up of heavy DVR users, you can upgrade to 200 hours of DVR space for an additional $14.99 per month.

Hulu Device Compatibility

Hulu is a giant in the streaming industry, but their Hulu Live offering is still pretty new. So while it is available on the most popular devices, it isn’t available on as many platforms as their exclusively on-demand service. However, considering the company’s reputation and connections, we’re confident that it won’t be long before Hulu Live is available on devices across the board.

TV & Video Players:

  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast
  • Roku

Phones & Tablets:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Android phones
  • Android tablets

Gaming Consoles:

  • Xbox One
  • Xbox 360

Laptops & Computers:

  • Macs
  • PCs

#5 PlayStation Vue: Great if You’re Looking for More than Just ABC

What We Like: The number of channels available

Drawbacks: The price

Who It’s Perfect for: Fans who want to watch Grey’s Anatomy plus Game of Thrones and other premium programming without a cable package

PlayStation Vue gets our #5 spot because the basic plan offers about the same number of channels as other providers on our list, but at a higher price. However, the right provider for you will depend largely on your area, and in some regions, PlayStation Vue is clearly the best option.

Pricing for PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue is definitely the highest-priced option on our list. Plans start at $39.99, the same as Hulu Live. However, unlike Hulu Live, PlayStation Vue doesn’t offer a comparable on-demand library, original programming, or a commercial-free option.

However, if you’re willing to pay a little more, you could easily get PlayStation’s Ultra package, which gets you over 90 channels, including HBO, Showtime, and sports fan favorites like the NFL Network and the MLB Network. So if you’re a Game of Thrones enthusiast or a pro sports aficionado in addition to being a Grey’s Anatomy fan, PS Vue may be your best option.

Watching Grey’s Anatomy with PlayStation Vue

Like the other providers on our list, live programming availability depends a lot on your area. If your local ABC station is available, PlayStation Vue is an easy, convenient way to watch Grey’s Anatomy live online. If it’s not, you can still watch the latest episodes on demand after they air.

PlayStation Vue DVR Service

PlayStation Vue does offer a DVR service, which is included in your package. You can record as many programs as you want, but the caveat is that they’re saved for only 28 days. So if you’re looking for a way to record and binge-watch the entire season, PlayStation Vue is probably not the best service for your needs. But if you’re just looking for a way to watch Grey’s on your own schedule during the week, then PlayStation’s DVR is a great way to fill that need.

PlayStation Vue Device Compatibility

PlayStation Vue is the only live streaming service that is compatible with PlayStation devices. So if you already own a PS3 or a PS4 and don’t want to buy a new device, PlayStation Vue is pretty much the only way to go.

TV & Video Players:

  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast
  • Roku

Phones & Tablets:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Amazon Fire tablets
  • Android phones
  • Android tablets

Gaming Consoles:

  • PlayStation 3
  • PlayStation 4

Laptops & Computers:

  • Macs
  • PCs
