*TIP: AMC offers very limited on-demand options when it comes to The Walking Dead. Typically, services with on-demand episodes of the show are limited to the same selection of four past episodes. These episodes are not from the most recent season, which makes it impossible to watch season 8 on demand. We’ve taken this into account in our rankings, placing a stronger-than-usual emphasis on each service’s DVR offerings.

#1 PlayStation Vue: Top-Notch Quality and Unlimited DVR

What We Like: DVR space and user-friendly interface

Drawbacks: Higher price

Who It’s Perfect for: The Walking Dead fans who want to watch the latest episodes on their own schedule

It’s Sunday, and you’re looking forward to watching The Walking Dead live stream tonight. For that, we strongly recommend PlayStation Vue.

PlayStation Vue is extremely user friendly, so it’s easy to find and tune in to the channels and shows you love. You also get unlimited DVR space, albeit with a few caveats, which means you don’t have to worry about missing the latest Walking Dead episode because your DVR was full. On the whole, we feel like these perks more than make up for the higher price tag.

PlayStation Vue Pricing

One of the drawbacks to PlayStation Vue service is its higher price. While most streaming services cost about $35 a month, PlayStation Vue is $39.99 per month for the basic package. While we definitely feel the perks of PlayStation Vue service outweigh this drawback, it still may not be the right choice for your household if you’re on a tight budget.

Watching The Walking Dead with PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue offers perhaps the best user experience for Walking Dead fans. The service’s interface is easy to use, and the picture quality is superb—even when you’re watching live TV. That’s good news for cord-cutters looking to watch The Walking Dead without major lags or glitchy streams.

As far as watching The Walking Dead on demand, PlayStation Vue and other streaming services are able to offer only the limited selection of Walking Dead episodes we mentioned above. However, PlayStation Vue does feature a comprehensive DVR that’ll keep you from missing a single moment if you’re unable to tune in live.

PlayStation Vue DVR Service

Perhaps the biggest reason we chose PlayStation Vue as our top pick for watching The Walking Dead is its DVR. PlayStation Vue users don’t have to worry about storage space. All you have to do is add The Walking Dead to your list of favorite shows, and it’ll automatically record any episodes as they air.

The caveat, however, is that recorded shows are available for only 28 days after they’re recorded. So if you’re looking for a way to record every episode from season 8 for binge-watching later, you may be out of luck.

PlayStation Vue Device Compatibility

PlayStation Vue is compatible with most devices. However, because PlayStation is first and foremost a video game company, it does not offer compatibility with rival gaming consoles, most notably the Xbox.

TV & Video Players:

  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast
  • Roku

Phones & Tablets:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Amazon Fire tablets
  • Android phones
  • Android tablets

Gaming Consoles:

  • PlayStation 3
  • PlayStation 4

Laptops & Computers:

  • Macs
  • PCs

#2 Sling TV: Cheapest Service for AMC Fans, Even with DVR Add-On

What We Like: Affordable pricing and compatibility with lots of devices

Drawbacks: DVR costs extra

Who It’s Perfect for: Walking Deadheads who want the most affordable option for watching AMC

Sling TV gets our #2 ranking primarily because of how affordable it is. Of course, if you’re not able to watch The Walking Dead live every Sunday, you will need to pay extra for DVR service, which is why we couldn’t place this service at number one.

Sling TV Pricing

Sling TV is the least expensive option when it comes to watching live Walking Dead episodes, with the most basic package (Sling Orange) costing just $20 a month. Of course, if you opt to add DVR service to your package, it’ll cost $5 more per month, but your total price should still be lower than you’d pay with the next lowest options, YouTube TV and DIRECTV NOW.

Watching The Walking Dead with Sling TV

With Sling TV, you get access to the live AMC stream, so you can watch The Walking Dead right as new episodes air. Unfortunately, Sling TV is just as limited as other services in terms of its on-demand offerings of The Walking Dead. That means if you’re not able to watch season 8 episodes as they air, you’ll have to upgrade your plan to include a cloud-based DVR.

Sling TV DVR Service

One of the biggest downsides to getting Sling TV is that its DVR service isn’t included. In order to access Sling TV’s DVR service, you’ll need to opt for the DVR add-on, which costs an extra $5 per month and gets you access to 50 hours of storage. Add that $5 per month to the $20 monthly cost of service, and you’re still paying $10 less per month than you would with any other service.

Keep in mind, however, that 50 hours of DVR storage fills up very quickly. A single season of The Walking Dead will take up 16 hours of storage all by itself, so if you’re planning to record anything other than The Walking Dead, 50 hours may not be enough for your household.

Sling TV Device Compatibility

Sling TV is compatible with an impressive number of devices, which makes it easier for new users to access it without needing to buy a new device. However, anyone looking to stream The Walking Dead on a gaming device other than the Xbox One is out of luck, so gamers beware.

TV & Video Players:

  • Apple TV
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Roku
  • Chromecast
  • Android TV
  • Xiaomi
  • Leeco
  • AirTV Player
  • ZTE
  • Channel Master
  • LG Webos

Phones & Tablets:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Android phones
  • Android tablets
  • Amazon Fire tablets

Gaming Consoles:

  • Xbox One

Laptops & Computers:

  • Chrome
  • Windows 10
  • Macs running Lion 10.7 or higher

#3 YouTube TV: Great Deal If You Live in the Right Area

What We Like: Unlimited DVR space

Drawbacks: Limited availability and device compatibility

Who It’s Perfect for: Cord-cutters who live in an eligible area and want to binge season 8 of The Walking Dead

YouTube TV is probably the best streaming service for fans looking to binge-watch or archive the latest season of The Walking Dead. With YouTube TV, you get unlimited DVR storage, so you can save every episode from as many shows as you want. The one caveat: YouTube TV service is currently available in only about 50% of US markets. In other words, there’s a 50–50 chance that you won’t be able to sign up for the service at all.

That being said, if you live in the right area and you’re wondering how to watch The Walking Dead without cable, YouTube TV could easily be the best choice for you.

YouTube TV Pricing

YouTube TV is pretty average in terms of price. At $35 per month, it’s the same price as DIRECTV NOW, but it is more than Sling TV’s basic package. YouTube TV is different, however, in that it doesn’t offer package tiers. In other words, that $35 per month gets you access to every channel currently available through YouTube TV (40+). As the service continues to expand, it’s possible that this may change or that prices may increase. But for now, at least, it’s shaping up to be a steal for the price.

Watching The Walking Dead with YouTube TV

Like the other streaming services on our list, YouTube TV offers live AMC streaming, so you can watch Walking Dead episodes as they air. YouTube TV is also limited to the same on-demand episodes from past seasons that other services offer. However, YouTube TV does make it easier than other services to record the latest Walking Dead episodes, thanks to its unlimited cloud DVR. That perk might have bumped Sling TV and PlayStation Vue out of their spots, if only YouTube TV were more widely available.

YouTube TV DVR Service

YouTube TV’s biggest selling point is its DVR service, which is included in your plan at no extra charge. There’s no cap on your DVR storage space, and you can save your recordings for as long as you want them. In other words, you can record every episode from season 8 and still have enough room to record all the other shows you love. This is especially convenient for Walking Deadheads looking to save the entire season for binge-watching down the road.

YouTube TV Device Compatibility

YouTube TV is still a pretty new service, and since it’s owned by Google—the same company that makes the Chromecast—it’s understandable (if not terribly convenient) that YouTube TV is currently available only on Chromecast devices, Android TVs, and select phones and tablets. Apple users can also AirPlay YouTube TV from their mobile device to their Apple TV, though there is no YouTube TV app available on the Apple TV itself.

TVs and Video Players:

  • Android TV
  • Chromecast

Phones and Tablets:

  • Android phones
  • Android tablets
  • iPads
  • iPhones

Gaming Consoles:

  • None

Laptops and Tablets:

  • Macs
  • PCs

Get a free Chromecast when you pay for your first month of YouTube TV service. Visit the company’s offer page to learn more.

#4 DIRECTV NOW: No DVR Service, But Best for Premium Channel Add-Ons

What We Like: The low-cost premium channels

Drawbacks: Still no DVR service (but it should be coming soon)

Who It’s Perfect for: Fans who want premium channel programming in addition to The Walking Dead

DIRECTV NOW comes in last on our list because while the service offers a Walking Dead live stream every week, it has no DVR to accommodate users who can’t watch every Sunday night. DIRECTV NOW’s selection of on-demand Walking Dead episodes is the same as other providers, so you’re ultimately stuck either watching new episodes live as they air or simply missing them altogether.

That being said, DIRECTV NOW is still a quality service, particularly if you’re a fan of premium-channel programming. DIRECTV NOW offers premium channels like HBO® for half the price of most streaming services, which makes it easier and less expensive to watch shows like Game of Thrones. So if you’re looking for a streaming service that can deliver programming from all your favorite fandoms (not just The Walking Dead), DIRECTV NOW might be the best choice for you.

AMC is included in DIRECTV NOW’s basic package, which costs $35 per month. It’s still more expensive than Sling TV, but it’s actually fairly average compared to other streaming services. But where DIRECTV NOW really shines is in its premium channel pricing. While Sling TV and PlayStation Vue charge $15 per month for HBO®, for example, DIRECTV NOW offers it for just $5 per month. In fact, you’ll pay 2–3 times less for your premium channels with DIRECTV NOW than you would with any other streaming service. That’s great news for cord-cutters looking to get access to both The Walking Dead and their favorite premium-channel programming, like Game of Thrones.

Watching The Walking Dead with DIRECTV NOW

DIRECTV NOW does offer a live AMC stream, so it is an option if you’re looking for a way to watch The Walking Dead season 8 as the new episodes air. However, with its limited on-demand options for the show and its lack of DVR service, DIRECTV NOW is likely not the best option for fans who can’t tune in promptly.

Unfortunately, DIRECTV NOW does not currently offer a DVR option with its service. That means it’ll be impossible for Walking Dead fans to catch the latest episodes after they air without subscribing to another service. If you’re not worried about it and know that you’ll be able to tune in live each week, you should definitely check out DIRECTV NOW’s other channel offerings to see if it’s the right service for you.

There is one piece of good news on the horizon, though—DIRECTV NOW has a DVR option in the works, which is due to arrive sometime in the fall of 2017. Once the service starts offering a DVR, DIRECTV NOW could easily skyrocket to the top of our list. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more, so stay tuned.

DIRECTV NOW Device Compatibility

DIRECTV NOW offers compatibility with most major streaming devices, like the Chromecast and the Roku. However, it is not compatible with any gaming consoles, so gamers trying to avoid buying a new device may want to consider PlayStation Vue or Sling TV instead.

TV & Video Players:

  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast
  • Roku

Phones & Tablets:

  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Android phones

Gaming Consoles:

  • none

Laptops & Computers:

  • Macs (Safari)
  • PCs (Chrome)

Other Legal, On-Demand Options

Amazon Video

The upside to using Amazon is that you can watch new episodes of The Walking Dead online the day after they air. The downside: you have to buy them. Individual episodes generally cost $2.99 each, or you can buy the entire season for $42.99. Of course, buying the season might not be a bad idea if you’re looking for a way to binge-watch the entire season later. Plus, you can watch every episode without having to deal with commercials.

Amazon Prime subscribers also get access to specials like The Walking Dead: Cast and Creators Live at PALEYFEST, which are included with your $99/year Prime membership. These documentaries feature lengthy interviews with the cast and creators of the show, shine a light on the showrunners’ creative process, and give you insight into the behind-the-scenes happenings of the show itself. So if you’re a die-hard Walking Deadhead, you may want to sign up for an Amazon Prime free 30-day trial to get the full experience.

Like Amazon, iTunes is a great way to watch The Walking Dead online, free of commercials, the day after new episodes air. Apple also charges $2.99 per episode and $42.99 for the season, but buying the season also gets you access to short behind-the-scenes extras. In general, we’d say iTunes is probably the best on-demand option for Apple users who want unfettered and permanent access to the latest Walking Dead episodes.

Can You Watch The Walking Dead on Hulu?

If you’re looking to watch The Walking Dead online using Hulu, you are out of luck. As of right now, Hulu doesn’t have the rights to the show, but you can stream episodes from TWD spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead. Of course, that could always change, and if The Walking Dead does show up on Hulu, we’ll be the first to let you know.

Watch Past Season of The Walking Dead on Netflix

Season 8 will not be available on Netflix until it has ended, so if you’re trying to avoid spoilers, you’ll want to go another route. However, Netflix is a great option if you’re looking to catch up on old seasons of The Walking Dead. The popular streaming service currently offers the first seven seasons of the show, so you can stream The Walking Dead online, free of commercials, without having to purchase episodes or DVDs.

NOW TV Lets UK Fans Watch Walking Dead Online

If you live in the UK, you have a great legal option for watching season 7 of The Walking Dead streaming. With NOW TV (owned by Sky), you can sign up for their Entertainment Pass and get access to 13 of the best pay TV channels. This means you’ll be able to watch The Walking Dead online live as it airs as well as on demand afterward. In fact, right now they have every episode of The Walking Dead available for streaming on demand.

NOW TV’s Entertainment Pass is just PS6.99 a month and offers loads of content. Click here to learn more.

FYI – AMC posts current season episodes (the most recent 5 episodes, I think) the day after it airs. Not just the first episode of the season.
